Brad Pitt to film in Cornwall

Hollywood heartthrob Brad Pitt will be filming scenes for World War Z between the 2nd and 14th August in Falmouth. Based on a novel by Max Brooks and set in the future after a war against Zombies, hence the title; the film is set to be released next year.

Filming has already taken place in Malta. It's believed the Falmouth scenes will be onboard a ship.

Richard Gates, the town manager said: "This is a major coup for Falmouth and we're pulling out all the stops to prepare for the influx of crew and cast.With Henri Lloyd Falmouth Week taking place at the same time, there is going to be an almighty buzz."

On the Camel Trail between Bodmin and Wadebridge on Friday, it was a joy to see carpets of snowdrops in the woods.

You can celebrate Snowdrop Sunday at Pencarrow House near Bodmin this Sunday 20th;
'Snowdrops and primroses will be vying with the earliest camellias and rhododendrons around the house and surrounding woodland walks, bringing the first glimpses of spring after the bleakness of winter. Your walk can be as brief or as extended as you wish. The Friends of Pencarrow, all volunteers dedicated to helping restore the house and gardens, will be serving piping hot soup with a roll, or simply tea, coffee and cakes'.

Looe hosts the UK's Longest Buffet

Looe is to host the UK's Longest Buffet this November which will run for almost nine miles.

You'll be able to enjoy some of the best Cornish food served by Looe's award-winning restaurants, Squid Ink, Barclay House and Trawlers on the Quay. But before you get your hiking boots out and corn plasters at the ready, they're combining the 150th anniversary celebrations of the Looe Valley Line, which runs along one of the most picturesque valleys in the UK, with the fantastic food and drink that Looe has to offer.

The UK's Longest Buffet will take place on the Looe to Liskeard lunchtime railway service on four consecutive Tuesdays during November.

Squid Ink, Barclay House and Trawlers on the Quay have all bagged awards as part of Taste of the West, previously beating such entrants as Jamie Oliver's Fifteen and many outstanding establishments throughout the county over the past two years, and this is their way of putting Looe on the culinary map.

Passengers will be enjoying such wonderful tasty treats as locally caught scallops and king prawns set in squid ink jelly with black sesame crackers, lemon crème fraîche and caviar, the delicious seafood dish, Cataplana, Cornish Orchard apple and Calvados jelly with ginger cream and ginger and dark chocolate hazelnut biscotti and vanilla panacotta with spiced blackberries and honeycomb.

Great visit to Camel Valley Winery outside Bodmin yesterday - the tour was led by winemaker Sam Lindo (UK Wine Maker of the Year 2010); not surprisingly, Sam was still grinning at the fact that Camel Valley had just won the Trophy for best sparkling rose in the world (including champagne) at the International Wine Challange 2010.

The annual Summer Solstice Party on the village green in Herodsfoot had and extra element (or two) this year - we were also helping celebrate some "significant number" birthdays.
The weather was good, the food and entertainment fantastic.
The spit roast lamb was probably our best ever thanks to the efforts of Ian Gordon and Pete Gough - nothing but a few bones left at the end of the night:-)

Some recent guests at Well Cottage got to see what Herodsfoot village life is all about - on Tuesday 11th June The Trig Morris Men came to Herodsfoot to entertain us. And, being sponsored by Skinners Fine Cornish Ales, they brough a keg to refresh us:-).
Pretty much all of the village turned our and many joined in the final dance.....

Great Day at the Royal Cornwall Show

....and a chance to meet up with friends and neighbours. What's interesting is that every year, the links between Cornish farming and food get stronger and nowhere is this more evident than at the Royal Cornwall. Highlights of our visit - the poultry section (Jackie's next project = ducks at Coombe Farm, plus some replacement chickens), the eco-build section (Peter's interested in building a wind turbine), plus - of course - the food marquees. Needless to say, we came home with plenty of goodies!

One of the oldest traditions in a county steeped in myth and ceremony, obby oss day brings crowds to the streets of Padstow on May 1st.

Celebrating the arrival of spring, the town is decorated with spring flowers and greenery, there's music, traditonal songs ('Unite and Unite and let us all Unite'), the procession... and of course the Obby Oss itself. And much revelry!! Not to be missed....

Yesterday, I was at Duchy College talking to some people who are brilliantly committed to making quality products using local ingredients - including just a mile or so from Well Cottage : Westnorth Farm, home of Cornish Orchards apple juices, cider and all things apple-related (www.cornishorchards.co.uk). We watched a demo by award-winning cheese -maker Sue Proudfoot of Whalesborough Farm (http://uktv.co.uk/food/localfoodhero/outlet/oid/7484) (it was absolutely fascinating to watch the care and delicacy involved in handling the curds & whey!), and tested out some great new yogurts from Valerie at Bocaddon Farm near Pelynt, another local enterprise (just across the West Looe Valley from Well Cottage) producing great cheeses and 'real veal' : www.bocaddonfarmveal.com

Tickes now on sale !- we've booked to see Show of Hands on 13th May - great live act, we've seen them many times in the past and are looking forward to seeing them again.

Also on the bill - literary and political celebs, music, theatre, something for everyone in fact - from Jo Brand to Tony Benn, & Paddy Ashdown to Gilbert O'Sullivan (remember him!?) and plenty in between. The festival runs from 7th to 16th May, http://www.dumaurierfestival.co.uk/

Taste South East Cornwall Young Chefs

We're just back from the Taste-South East Cornwall Young Chef of the Year competition http://www.taste-southeastcornwall.com/ sponsored by Caradon District Council and held at Trelaske Hotel near Looe. http://www.trelaskehotel.com/

In this closely- fought contest, all the entrants were winners - but out on top by a whisker was Sam Parry from Liskeard School , closely followed in joint second place by Gabriella Lake from Looe School and Tom Sainsbury from Saltash.

The entrants not only had to devise and cook a two course meal using local produce to a fixed budget, but they had to cook in front of an audience AND with photographers from the Cornish Times, Cornish Guardian and Western Morning News recording their every move!

This was a great celebration of young culinary talent - thanks to all involed including organiser Chef Nick Barclay (http://www.chefnickbarclay.com/) , judges Richard McGeown from Couch's in Polperro (http://www.couchspolperro.com/) , Carol Trewin from the Western Morning News and Ross Lewin from Trelaske.

Great stay at Budock Vean

Our stay at Budock Vean was perfect - fantastic location, great food, great service and while the snow brought the rest of the country to a standstill, we enjoyed the sunshine. Cornwall's turn for snow came later!

We've been pondering Valentine's Day at Well Cottage for a while and come to the momentous decision to keep it simple! So no reinventing the wheel, just the offer of a cosy, romantic weekend for two in our lovely cottage with a bottle of fabulous Camel Valley Brut ( http://www.camelvalley.com/ ) and some scrummy hand-made chocs.
